Golf-Themed Birthday Cake

Golf-Themed Birthday Cake

September is truly the month of birthdays. Between my family and my work family, there are A LOT  of birthdays this month.

So, in continuation with the September Birthday Phenomenon, I made a cake for a friend of mine based off of a Golf-Theme.

The cake was Red Velvet with Traditional Cream Cheese Frosting and the cake was colored green to match the beautiful landscape that all golfers would be familiar with. The cake also featured some fondant detail that displayed part of a golf course, and showcased a small golf ball very close to going and making a Hole-in-One…

Happy Birthday!

“Ala’Ja” Juicy Couture Purse Cake

Juicy Couture Purse Cake

This cake was a blast to make!
I made this cake for a friend of mine who’s oldest child is turning this weekend, and guess what? She LOVES Juicy Couture!
So, to go along with the theme, I made the cake to look like one of the purses that Mom said met the “Thumbs Up” criteria from the Birthday Girl, and added a few extra special details.
The cake itself was a Vanilla Cake with Vanilla Buttercream. The cake was carved, using a serrated knife, into the shape of the purse. (I decided to make the cake lying down, so that during transportation the risk of falling down was reduced. However, if you decided to make a cake similar to this one and wanted it to be a true 3D replica…go for it…and make the cake stand upright!). Once the cake was carved, given a crumb-coat of buttercream icing, and allowed to chill in the freezer for a bit, it was covered with fondant (I recommend Satin Ice both for taste and workability) and airbrushed to the desired color. Now, I must admit that the cake came out a bit darker than I originally had wanted, however, these things happen and they’re not worth sweating over.
To add details, I colored some fondant pink with Wilton Color Gel and used the pink fondant for the pocket, border, and trim detail. The pink fondant was also used to make the “ribbon” that acts as a decorative addition at the top border of the purse.
To keep the cake close to the authentic model of the Juicy Couture purses, I added a similar logo that’s normally found on the Juicy merchandise. I also personalized the logo by adding a pink fondant “A” for the Birthday Girl’s name, that was cut out using a Cricut Cake Machine.
All-in-all, the cake was finished with matching pink handles, a pink crinckle rose, and a “Happy Birthday” message for the Birthday Girl herself!
